This session will assist future and current chief officers (especially battalion chiefs), successfully prepare for the role of shift commander, division head and/or program manager. Having the weight of the gold badge can be very heavy and overwhelming for many, especially those who have not adequately prepared themselves for the position of chief officer. Topics such as leadership, teamwork, career development, mentoring, public relations, personnel issues and administrative skills will be discussed, as well as situations that have occurred around the country that could affect a chief officer. For a chief officer in today's fire service, it is not if, but when, they will be faced with a challenging situation that can make or break their career and the reputation of their organization!
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the session, the attendee will be able to compare and contrast the primary roles and responsibilities of a chief officer as opposed to a company officer.
At the end of the session, the attendee will be able to define the term "Courage Under Fire Leadership" and how it relates to their position as a chief officer.
At the end of the session, the participant will be able to create an action plan for success as a newly or soon-to-be promoted chief officer.
