In a recent survey of 2,500 firefighters, 53% cited poor agency leadership as the least satisfying aspect of their job; 25% said company officers don’t have the requisite training. These numbers present a “problem lying in wait”: lack of trust in first-line leadership. But as company officers look up the leadership chain for support, it’s not always there. This seminar explores the disconnect that often exists between chief officers and company officers. Attendees will learn common misconceptions chiefs have about selecting and preparing fire officers. The session will use examples of leadership failures and successes to show how chief officers can cross the leadership chasm, providing the guidance company officers need to be successful.
